Hike the proposed Scandia National Recreation Area. Search for HWA

June 5, 2014
Times Observer

On Sunday, June 8, Friends of Allegheny Wilderness (FAW) will hike into the untrammeled wilds of the proposed Scandia National Recreation Area on the west side of the Allegheny Reservoir to take in the stunning backcountry scenery and to look for signs of the non-native invasive insect hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA) that threatens Pennsylvania's state tree. The hike will be approximately four miles round-trip, and all off trail (though old remnant logging roads will be utilized in places). Hikers will need to be able and willing to climb over fallen logs and navigate steep terrain in places.
