SHIPPENSBURG-The 2014 PIAA Track Championships got underway with four Warren athletes competing Friday at Shippensburg University, though none were able to advance to the finals on Saturday.
"It wasn't our best day," said Dragons' coach Steve Norris. "The kids did fantastic. I'm proud of them. It wasn't anyone's fault, things just didn't go our way."
Ryan Shattuck started the day in the 110 hurdles, finishing seventh in his heat with a time of 16.29. Only the top three finishers and the next four best times advanced to Saturday's semifinal round.
Tanner Rosenberg ran a 51.05 in the 400-meter dash to finish fifth in the event's first heat.
Luke Wortman was scheduled to represent Warren in the 300 hurdles, but a snafu at the starting line left the senior out of the competition.
According to Norris, track officials never called Wortman to the starting blocks - a mistake that wasn't realized until the heat had been run.
"The official in charge never caught it," said Norris. "He was basically punished for someone else's error. We went to the tent... one official thought it would be okay to get him in the last heat (where there was an open lane), but another official said no."
Warren's final event of the day, the 4-by-400 relay, didn't go much better. The Dragons finished with a time of 3:29, but received a disqualification on the official scoresheet after an incomplete handoff.
Sheffield's Adam Higby - seeded 22nd in the Class AA boys' high jump - is scheduled to compete Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
