Youngsville traveled to Eisenhower Monday for the last track meet of the season, and split victories. The Lady Eagles came out on top in a close meet that was decided on the track, 77-73. The boys didn't fair so well, and the Knights pulled out an upset, 90-60.
'We're going to call this meet a close shave," said Eisenhower boys' coach David Bauer. "On our team's Facebook page I made some challenges for the boys, and promised to grow a beard until the Fourth of July if they were able to complete them. Winning today was one... We knew we had to come out and race the best we had all season, I pushed the boys a little with those challenges, and today they came out and performed. It was a great way to end the year."
Eisenhower sophomore Noah VanHouton qualified for districts in two events at the meet. Both the 300 hurdles and triple jump.
"Several guys had PR's today, but Noah's performance was great," said Bauer. "To make districts on this track is hard, but he's been close all season and it was great to see him get there today."
For the Eagles, it was in the throwing events, and not the track that they excelled. Junior Dakota Morse had a personal record in shot put, and came in second in both the disus and javelin.
"We did really well in certain areas," said Youngsville boys' coach Jeff Manelick. "We were missing a few guys, but you can't take away from what Eisenhower did. We just didn't get it done on the track when we needed to."
The Youngsville girls made it a close meet, which came down to a two-event swing in their favor.
"We had to have two of the three relays," said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. "The 4x1, and 4x4 really hurt us. We did well though. It was close. Our freshman really came through today, especially some of our throwers, and Tiffany Work qualified in the 100 hurdles today. She's been .07 off all season, and we're happy to see her get there today."
For the Eagles, this meet was about being mental strong and finishing races.
"At the beginning of the season, I think we lacked the mental toughness you need to win in this," said Youngsville girls' coach John Victor. "Today, we got points in places that we normally don't and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of this, and watch these girls grow through the season. They'll do everything you ask of them, they work hard. Our goal was to win the region, and while Seneca won it this year, we were only second to them. Now it's about distrits and individuals. The team game is over."
Youngsville junior Brooklyn Messinger was a three-time winner during the meet, in the 3200 relay, 1600M, and 3200M.
Leigh Fehlman's time of 2:36 in the 800 was good for a win, and a spot at districts for the freshman standout.
Both Eisenhower and Youngsville will be sending athletes to Districts this Saturday at Harbor Creek.
