James V. Apicella, 88, of Althom, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 07, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
Jim was born March 7, 1926 in Canonsburg, Pa., a son to the late Phillip and Mikalena Apicella. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and eventually joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he was a deep sea diver, serving on the Destroyer George K. Mackenzie. Jim taught elective classes for med students at the Univer-sity of Pittsburgh for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, trees, flowers and his animals. Jim and Lorraine also enjoyed sit-ting on their swing by the river watching eagles daily. He loved going to the casi-no on the bus with his pals and also loved his scratch off tickets. He always wore his red heart survivor hat. Jim loved talking and rem-iniscing with his friends and family. He was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lorraine (Susnak) Apicella, whom he married on Febru-ary 14, 1953 in Pittsburgh, two children; James V. Api-cella Jr. of Althom, Leann (Dennis) Bee of Tidioute, a brother-in-law; Tony Deprisco and his faithful golden retriever, Toby.
In addition to his parents, Jim is proceeded in death by his siblings; Phil-lip Apicella, Matthew Api-cella, Tony Apicella and Nancy Deprisco.
Friends will be received Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 314 North Main Street in Youngsville from 12-2 p.m., at which time a memorial service will be held with the Rev. Marcus Briggs, Chaplain of the Rouse Warren Co. Home, officiating.
