CLARION-The Sheffield Lady Wolverines opened their season on a winning note in Clarion Friday, defeating the host Bobcats via mercy rule, 16-4.
Sheffield starts the year with a 1-0 record after winning just one game all of last season.
"I thought we played solid defense for it being our first time outside and having a lot of girls in new positions," said Sheffield coach Glenn Baldensperger. "It was a total team effort; we need to continue that moving forward. There was one inning where we threw the ball around a little bit and gave away a couple runs, but I was pleased with the way the girls played."
The Wolverine bats exploded for nine runs in the top of the third and added three more to end the game after five innings. As a team, Sheffield slugged out 28 hits compared to just five for the Bobcats.
Every player in the Sheffield lineup came around to score at least one run.
Maddie Fiscus went five-for-five at the plate in addition to taking the win in the circle. Abby Cromwell and Jade Moore each had four hits while Emily Grove, Claire Pierson, and Emily Knowles added three each.
Fiscus and Pierson combined to strike out all 15 Clarion batters.
The Lady Wolverines picked up a win in a two-inning junior varsity game, 6-5. Pierson was the winning pitcher in that game, Kameron Orinko had two hits including a double, and Alyssa Coons also doubled.
Sheffield goes for win number two on Wednesday, hosting Curwensville for a 3 p.m. start.
