ALTOONA - D.J. Fehlman and Garrett Smead are in the semifinals of the Northwest Region Class AAA Tournament after two wins each Friday at Altoona Fieldhouse.
"D.J. has wrestled real solid," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. "He had the Hendricks boy from McLane his last match and he's a pretty darn good wrestler."
Fehlman, the District 10 champion at 126 pounds, pinned the District 6 fourth seed in 2:55 to open the tournament, before an 8-0 win over Hunter Hendricks, who was the fourth seed out of D10.
Fehlman will meet District 6 champ Anthony Myers, of State College, in the semifinals on Saturday.
Smead won by a 13-5 decision over District 8 champion Deonte Wadley in his opening 170-pound match, before a 56-second pin in the quarterfinals.
"We weren't quite sure what we were going to have with his ankle (recovering from injury), and he majored the kid and wrestled with a lot more confidence the second match, and is building a little momentum," said Baldensperger. "I'm elated for him."
Alex Streich (220) was wrestling in the consolation rounds, going 1-1 Friday. Cody Gunn (182) was eliminated.
In Northwest Region Class AA, Eisenhower sophomore Louie Head is 1-1 at Sharon High School. Qualifying for regions as the District 10 Class AA fifth seed, Head defeated the D9 No. 4 seed Cody McClintock of Brockway by decision, then Cochranton's Rovert Boozer earned a 10-2 decision.
Sheffield's Doug Grubbs (145) and Brian Fries (138) each lost their opening match, but remain alive in the consys, beginning Saturday morning.
