Eisenhower's next opponent is one it knows all too well.
The Knights square off against top-seeded Cochranton (19-3, 12-0) in the District 10 Class A semifinal round at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Meadville High School in search of the season's first win against the Region 3-champ Cardinals.
In addition to a pair of regular season losses this year, Ike was defeated in last season's semifinal matchup with Cochranton, 52-34. The most recent meeting between the two schools ended in a 66-39 Cardinal win on Feb. 4 at Cochranton High School.
Eisenhower certainly isn't alone in its struggles against Cochranton; the Cardinals haven't lost to a Class A opponent all year. They average 61.2 points per game, and their 42.5 points allowed is second only to Girard.
Cochranton is led by the senior trio of Nick Dickson, Logan Herzberger, and Garrett Adams. Dickson and Herzberger were first-team all-region picks last season, and Dickson recently passed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Tre Frank is Eisenhower's leading scorer, though others such as Casey Vincent and Jarrett Johnson have shown the ability to get hot and light up the scoreboard. Johnson paced the offense with 23 points in the Knights' quarterfinal win over Rocky Grove.
As has been the case all season, Ike's success will rely on its deep bench. Frank, Vincent, Johnson, Chris Sanders, and Carter Farrell are the usual starting five, while Ricky Zortman, Alex Johnson, John Potts, and Kyle Hunt can fill in as needed.
Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, and is the first of a double-header at Meadville High School. The Class AAA semifinal game between Strong Vincent and Farrell will follow the Class A matchup.
The other Class A semifinal game featuring number two seed Kennedy Catholic and third-seeded Erie First Christian will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sharon High School. The winners of Eisenhower vs. Cochranton and Kennedy Catholic vs. Erie First will meet for the District 10 Class A championship on Feb. 28. The losers of Tuesday's games will play for third place and a spot in the PIAA playoffs the same day.
