Warren Area High School senior Garrett Smead is most worthy of being named the Times Observer Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's. This honor was because of one single match, on paper, but more so because of what he's going through off the mat. Smead is the top seed at 170 pounds heading into Friday's and Saturday's District 10 Class AAA Wrestling Championships at Central Tech High School. He's just 11-2 on the season, and he's been battling an injury that has seen him in and out of the District 10 wrestling rankings. Yet, when the Dragons were trailing Eisenhower, and they needed a win badly, Smead asked into the lineup and gutted out a second-period pin. Warren took the lead and the eventual win. Smead was seen walking the track at the Warren County YMCA on Wednesday, stretching out his leg. Blood is pumping from a strong heart, so he'll compete at districts and try to get through.
