Warren's swim teams are beginning to peak for the District 10 Class AAA Swimming Championships at the end of the month.
Boy, are they ever.
Just beginning their tapering/resting period before districts Feb. 28 and March 1, Warren swept East and Strong Vincent Thursday at the Warren County YMCA.
In the process, three individual school records were broken. Logan Gearhart broke two of them.
Gearhart has been chasing these records for two seasons, but on Thursday he broke the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke records at Warren Area High School.
Gearhart won the 200 free in 2:01.37, besting Adrian Shodi's 2007 school record of 2:02.30.
Gearhart also broke Brian Collins' 2006 record in the 100 back with a 1:02.44. Collins' record was a 1:02.49.
Bennett Steber smashed a record in the 100-meter breaststroke that has stood since 1989. Steber's time of 1:09.60 bested his previous best of 1:12.60, and broke Curt Jablonowski's 1989 record of 1:11.91.
"They're just starting their taper, so hopefully this is a sign of things to come," said Warren coach Jeff Walters.
In addition to a number of district qualifiers already this season, Lacey Grinnen was a new district qualifier on Thursday in the 400 free with "a huge time drop," said Walters. Samara Steber was also a new qualifier for districts in the 50 free.
"We had a lot of qualifiers tonight," said Walters.
