A tragic motor vehicle accident last June took the lives of Cody Mohrey and two of his friends.
People from Tidioute to West Hickory are preserving his memory with the Cody Mohrey Heart of Gold Scholarship.
Cody's mother, Tina Mohrey, said Wednesday that she still hears stories about how he helped other people, looked out for the underdog and those who were being bullied, hence the Heart of Gold name.
The scholarship will be offered annually to a Tidioute Community Charter School student to help with the costs of further education. Initially, there will be a single $1,000 scholarship each year, although that could change in the future, according to Mohrey.
It will be awarded based on an essay, and evaluations by teachers who knew him best, she said, including Michael Patterson, who Cody looked up to.
She said the idea started when Kim Wadlow of West Hickory held a dinner several weeks after the accident, and divided the money raised among the three friends' families.
Later, the TCCS Students Against Destructive Decisions also held a spaghetti dinner and divided the proceeds.
Mohrey "is in the early stages of planning a three-point hoops shoot," where people attending the TCCS boys and girls basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 12, can buy tickets for a random drawing. The winner will take their best shot, and a successful three-pointer will win a prize. That will take place at both half-times, and again between the games.
There will also be at least one half-court chance to will a 66-inch air hockey table valued at $400.
She said that other prizes currently include a season pass to all TCCS athletic events and a 13-week subscription to the Times Observer.
Prizes in the past have included tickets to Pittsburgh Pirates games, overnight stays and brunches at the Super 8 motel and the Holiday Inn, and many other donations from local businesses and individuals.
Mohrey said that the scholarship fund currently is between $3,000 and $4,000, which will fund the program for at least a couple of years and likely well beyond that.
