The events of Winterfest are designed to entertain, but they also generate revenue for worthy causes.
The Warren Salvation Army is the beneficiary of the fund-raising efforts associated with the annual Pat Shine Memorial Polar Bear Plunge.
Officials expected about 100 people to brave the icy water. They were right on.
"There were 99 plungers and we raised $6,800 to help families in Warren County," Salvation Army Major Ron Starnes said. "It was a great year and we thank the many plungers who partnered with us to help their neighbors in Warren County."
The sled-dog races and events associated with them also raise money.
Tionesta Valley Snowmobile Club, through the Jim Lobdell Memorial Sled Dog Races, West Penn Mushers, Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue, and the Canine Weight Pullers, raised $250 that was donated to the Lance Mackey Medical Fund, according to TVSC President Ed Atwood. Mackey is a four-time winner of both the Iditarod and Yukon Quest.
