Robert J. Schmitz, 82, formerly of 85 Fuller Ave., died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Warren General Hospital, surrounded by family.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1931, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Anthony and Ruby (Olson) Schmitz. He was raised and educated in Clinton, Iowa.
Mr. Schmitz joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school and served aboard the USS Sennet submarine during the Korean War. While in the service, he met the love his life, Ruth Williams, who was a Navy Wave.
They were married on March 17, 1954. She predeceased him on July 4, 2011, after 57 years of marriage.
One of his favorite pastimes was playing Bingo with his wife in Salamanca, N.Y. He also enjoyed harness racing and was a great handicapper.
He was an avid fisherman, golfer, bowler and gardener.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Schmitz worked for 35 years as a claims adjuster for Nationwide Insurance Co. and retired in 1988.
Mr. Schmitz was a longtime fan of Pittsburgh sports teams, the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
He was a longtime member of the Warren Elks Club, where he loved playing cribbage with his beloved Elks pals.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, James Schmitz, and a sister, Ruby Hyde.
Family includes three children, Debbie Masterson of Girard, Terrie Tucker and husband John Tucker of WinstonSalem, N.C., Janet Lyle and husband Dale Lyle of Scandia; grandchildren Emily Lawrence (Richard) of Utica, Robert Masterson of Erie, Bethany Masterson (Kyle Kleinedler) of Cleveland, Ohio, Bradley Tucker (Diana) of Bedford, N.H., Jillian Staiti (Michael) of Winston Salem, N.C., Katie Hodak (Kris) of Pittsfield and Allyson Van Ord (Jaron) of Scandia; and seven greatgrandchildren.
Family thanks his friends and caring staff at Warren Manor.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, 1003 Pennsylvania Ave., East. An Elks memorial service will follow. A funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
