First United Methodist Church of Warren, 200 Market Street, will offer a "Blue Christmas" service on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved one who has recently died; it may be a time of loneliness or just a minor state of depression (a "blue" time). The constant refrain on the radio and television, in stores and churches about the "happiness" of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or feel they have not yet had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation-all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. Some folk can use some time and space to acknowledge their sadness and concern, and to know that they are not alone.
This "Blue Christmas" srvice, also often known as "The Longest Night," is designed to provide this space, as well as some words and prayers to sooth and heal. God's presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle, and God's Word comes into the longest night to shine into our personal darkness. This service is open to all. A time of refreshment and greeting will be offered after the service. For information, call Dr. Jeff Sterling at 723-4930.
