ERIE - The Warren Dragon Tennis Team finished the season on Wednesday, but not before the junior doubles pair of Kim Parroccini and Megan Waterfield scored an impressive first-round victory over Kennedy Catholic's Avi Danta and Jillian Dunn at Pennbriar Club.
"This was a good win for our girls," reported Coach Jeff Bartsch, whose Dragon pair won the match 8-4 at the District 10 Class AA Doubles Championships. "Both of our girls had good returns-of-serve today, and that was the big difference in the match."
In the quarterfinal round, the Dragons ran into the top seeds and last year's state championship team from Mercyhurst Prep, Brittany McBride and Katie Ella.
"These girls had a great run. If you are going to lose, it may as well be to the reigning state champions," added Kim's father and Warren assistant coach John Parroccini.
Warren's top duo of Corie Eckman and Alexis Vavala dropped their opener to the No. 3-seeded team from General McLane.
"We were in the match, but we got a late start and we didn't have enough time to make up for early match games lost," said Bartsch.
Warren's other pair, Shoshanna Ochocki and Karly Taylor, dropped their first-round match, 8-2, to Villa Maria's top team.
On Saturday, three seniors represented Warren in the District 10 Singles Championships at the same venue. Corie Eckman, Cassie Johnson and Maggi Hansen all played their career-ending singles matches as two Mercyhurst girls finished first and second in the finals.
"We are pleased that five of our seniors were afforded one last opportunity to play in the D10 Championships," said Bartsch.
