FAIRVIEW The Lady Dragons tennis team shuffled the line-up on Tuesday when visiting Fairview, but fell to the Tigers, 4-1.
Warren's lone win came courtesy of Alexis Vavala and Shoshanna Ochocki, who teamed up to beat Fairview's Kylie Banister and Emma Kocjancic in second doubles. The first set went to the Tigers, 6-0, but the Dragon duo refused to lose in set number two with a 7-6 win. Tied at one set each, Warren prevailed by a score of 7-5 in the third set to claim the win.
"The entire team was supporting and cheering (Vavala and Ochocki)," said Warren assistant coach John Parroccini. "And when they won the match, the girls formed a victory arch for the winning doubles pair."
Senior Maggi Hansen played in the top singles spot against Fairview's Amy Matczak, dropping a 2-6, 3-6 decision to the Tiger.
"Maggi played well today," said Warren head coach Jeff Bartsch. "She was impressive with her passing shots and she forced her opponent to hit out-and-out winners to prevail."
Playing in the number two singles position, junior Kim Parroccini squared off with a powerful Stephanie Ace for the Tigers.
"I was pleased with Kim's performance today. She carried herself like a top tennis player though she dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision," added Bartsch.
Junior Phoebe Nelson played Fairview's Shannon Sertz at number three singles and lost a 1-6, 0-6 decision.
"Phoebe has been making big improvements in her game, and today she got an opportunity to use those newly developed skills," said Parroccini.
Warren's top doubles duo of Cassie Johnson and Corie Eckman took the opening set by a score of 6-3 before losing back-to-back games, 5-7 and 3-6.
In an exhibition match, the pair of Megan Waterfield and Maria Miller played out three full sets to see to Tigers win 6-3 in the third.
Warren is now 5-9 on the season with one match remaining against McDowell on October 8. The Lady Dragons travel to Sharon on Wednesday morning to participate in the Tri-County Tennis Championships at the Buhl Park.
