Elizabeth Reed Thoma, age 97, of 1107 Jackson Ave., Warren, Pa, went home to Glory on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House. Elizabeth was born April 29, 1916, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Richard S. and Catharine Service Bull.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School. She earned a BA from Mount Holyoke College and received a BS from Carnegie Mellon University. She worked as a secretary to the President of U.S. Steel for two years. She and her late husband moved to Warren in 1944 after the war. They owned and operated the family Gravely Tractor business on Jackson Avenue for many years.
Elizabeth had a passion for the Lord. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and a longtime member of the choir. She loved to sing. Her motto was "The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away". She did that by singing for over eighty years. She also enjoyed traveling; having been to Europe with the Mount Holyoke Choir, to Brazil to visit a college friend, and to Germany with family. She especially loved her family and enjoyed playing bridge.
She is survived by one daughter, Sally Beers and her husband Dale, of Saegertown, PA; a son, Richard H. Thoma and his fiance', Joy Wiedmaier, of Warren, PA; two grandchildren, Catharine Cwanek and her husband Matthew, of Fort Wayne, IN; and Linn Murray and her husband John, of Wilmore, KY; three greatgrandchil dren who brought great joy to her life, Torilinn, Allison, and Madelyn Cwanek.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death in 1968 by her husband, Roger W. Thoma Sr.; in 2004 by her son, Roger W. Thoma Jr.; and a brother killed in WWII, Richard S. Bull.
Friends will be received at the Peterson Blick Funeral Home, Inc, 1003 Penn Ave., E., Warren, PA, 16365 on Sunday, September 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
The funeral will be held 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Penn. Ave., E., Warren, PA with Rev. Kevin Haley, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Warren County Memorial Park.
