If Luke Wortman is still catching his breath, it would be understandable. The Warren Area High School senior chewed up some serious yardage - in the second half - of a Region 5 game Friday at Meadville in which the Dragons won, 33-21. In a 7-7 tie game at the half, Wortman took a D.J. Fehlman pass 70 yards for a touchdown to open the second half. After a Meadville score, Wortman took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for his second score. Another Meadville score, and Wortman took that ensuing kickoff 89 yards for his third touchdown and a 25-21 lead. That was all in the third quarter, in a six-minute span. If that wasn't enough, just a minute into the fourth quarter, he took a short Fehlman pass 78 yards to put the nail in the coffin. Oh, yeah, he had about 50 more yards on an interception return. For over 400 all-purpose yards and 200 receiving yards, Wortman is the Times Observer Male Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
Warren Area High School junior Megan Smoulder's golf game has been as nice as the weather this week. With the District 10 Tournament on the horizon next month, Smoulder had her best round of the season on Tuesday, with an 18-hole 85 to finish fourth out of 44 golfers at the North East Invitational at Green Meadows in North East. She was two strokes off second place, and the top golfer competing from District 10's Region 2. On Thursday, Smoulder was in a four-way tie for first with a nine-hole 44 at Warren's home region megamatch, thus ensuring her a trip to the D-10 tournament as one of the top eight averages from all four region megamatches - she finished second in the region. Smoulder is the Times Observer's Female Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Little Caesars.
