Winners in the duplicate bridge game at the YMCA were Joyce Davis and Janet Templeton, and Mary Anne Gibson and Bob Greco, tied for first with 38.5, and Magda Fanaritis and Doug Megill, third with 37.5.
Warren County Homeschoolers
Warren County Homeschoolers will have an informative evening on all things homeschooling from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Warren Alliance Church, 278 Kinzua Rd., just past Dairy Delight. At 6 p.m., there will be a presentation by John Ferry, Civil War re-enactor. Also, there will be a table set up for homeschooling items for sale and for free, so bring those items you no longer need. Participants should take a snack to share.
In observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the Warren County United Veterans' Council will conduct a "Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony" beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in Sugar Grove at the town park. The public is encouraged to join members of the county's veterans' organizations at this poignant ceremony. At 6 p.m., there will be a presentation by John Ferry, Civil War re-enactor.
The Allegheny Community Center (ACC) will have a tour of the Warren County Historical Society building and take a walking tour of historic downtown Warren on Monday, Sept. 23. Participants should meet at the coffee lounge at the ACC at 12:45 p.m. From there they will walk to the Historical Society. The tour will start at 1 p.m. and should last 90 minutes.
AOC on the move
On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC) will hike in Cornplanter State Forest near Tionesta. Participants will meet at the trailhead at 10 a.m. To get there from Tionesta drive across the Allegheny River on the Rt. 36 Bridge then turn right and drive two miles then turn right onto the Neiltown Road and drive one mile to the trailhead parking lot on the left. On Monday, Sept. 30, the AOC will hold its fall planning meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the home of Debra and John Young at 1588 Townline Rd., Russell. The meeting will start with a tureen dinner with participants bringing a dish to pass. They will schedule events for October, November, and December. Warren High School Class of 1958 will have lunch at New Beginnings in Sugar Grove at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. All classmates and spouses are welcome.
Grand Valley United Methodist Church at 107 Goodwill St. (off Route 27), Grand Valley, will host the annual Sunday school picnic (tureen style) at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. There will be a puppet show and other entertainment for children following the dinner, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary. The dinner will be open to the public; it is not necessary to be a church member to attend, but a dessert or dish to pass will be appreciated.
Toddler Time resumes in the Children's Department of the Warren Public Library on Monday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. This program, which requires no preregistration, will occur each Monday up through Dec. 9. Each program includes theme-based stories and songs. Children do a simple craft and engage in creative play at the end of each program. Books are geared towards ages one to four, but all ages are welcome. In addition to exposing the children to quality literature, it also provides socialization opportunities for little ones and their parents or caregivers. Do you like to tell stories? Do you like to listen to scary stories? What do you consider scary? Children ages 8 and older are invited to try their skills at writing a scary story just for fun. There will be one winner and three runners-up. The winning story will win a $50 Amazon gift card; the three runners-up will each receive a $30 Amazon gift card. Writing packet with suggestions and directions are available at the Warren Public Library on the semi-circle between the computers in the children's department. Packets can also be downloaded from the library website www.warrenlibrary.org under "Children's Events." Stories are due to the Children's Department by Monday, Oct. 21. Auditions are scheduled for Warren Players' production of "A Christmas Carol," the musical. This exciting show has a large cast with parts for: children in the cast, adult ensemble cast with featured roles, one male star, a large chorus, and dancers. Rehearsals will be at Struthers Library Theatre and First Lutheran Church, Warren. Preventing foodborne illness in a food establishment will be the focus of the ServSafe Training Course to be presented by the Penn State Extension on Tuesdays, Oct. 1 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Penn State Extension Office in Youngsville. The ServSafe exam will be given on Oct. 8 at noon. Registration fee is $175 per person. Those who pass the exam at the end of the training receive a certificate from the National Restaurant Association and meet the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for food safety training. ServSafe certification is valid for five years.
