The Warren Americans Boys Minors All-Star team got off to the exact start they were hoping for.
Tyler Gustafson pitched three strong innings, and Warren's offense piled up runs, as the Americans defeated Smethport/Mount Jewett, 23-4, in a shortened four-inning game at the Farm Colony Complex on Friday night.
After Gustafson struck out the side in the top of the first, Warren didn't waste any time jumping out to a commanding lead, scoring 10 first-inning runs.
Warren Americans’ Jacob DeSimone makes a diving attempt at a fly ball in left field on Friday in Warren’s 23-4 Boys Minors All-Star win over Smethport/Mt. Jewett at Farm Colony B at the Farm Colony Complex.
Smethport's starting pitcher walked the first three Warren batters, and all three would come around to score on wild pitches. After Ben Salapek walked, Hunter Loomis brought him home with an RBI single to make the score 4-0. Salapek didn't waste any time moving around the bases, as he scored after two Smethport throwing errors. Ben Berdine later knocked in Alex Borger, who had reached on an error, before Gustafson roped a double. Ryan Rafalski then hit a groundball to score both Berdine and Gustafson. Micah Passmore knocked in another run, before scoring the final run of the inning on a Smethport error.
Gustafson didn't make his defense work at all in the second inning, as he once again struck out the side.
Jacob DeSimone led off the bottom of the second with a single, and Dylan Maeder followed with another base hit. Both runners would advance on an error, with DeSimone coming all the way around to score. Loomis was then hit by a pitch, and both he and Maeder came around to score when Berdine reached on an error. Gustafson brought in a run with a single, and Passmore would later hit a deep triple - one-hopping the right-center field fence - to increase the lead to 16-0. Warren added one more in the second, as Passmore scored on a hit from Salapek.
Smethport finally got some offensive momentum going, as they loaded the bases to start the third with two singles and a walk. Gustafson struck out the next batter, but three straight singles made it 17-4.
Warren would finish its scoring in the third, adding six more runs. Maeder and James Swanson each drew a walk, and Rafalski hit a fly ball to right field that was misplayed, bringing in both runners. Passmore would go on to knock in another, and Salapek hit a triple while also coming home to score on an errant throw to give Warren its final run.
Loomis pitched the fourth and final inning for Warren, allowing no hits or runs while walking one. Gustafson was the winning pitcher, recording all nine of his outs via strikeout.
The Warren Americans will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Cameron County for a 4 p.m. game. The Warren Nationals Boys Minors All-Star team hosts Bradford at 4 p.m. at Betts-Jackson Field.
