The 2013 Elk Township Historical Society (ETHS) photography contest is in full swing. Photos are being accepted through July 8. As summer arrives, a drive or walk in beautiful Elk Township to snap some pictures for this year's event, might be just the thing to do. There are seven categories, and two photos may be submitted for each. The photographs for the first six categories must be taken within Elk Township and they are: Flora, Work & Play, People, Black & White, Animals and Seasons. The seventh category permits participants to photograph Anything, Anytime & Anywhere.
Photos should be 5"x 7" or 8"x 10", must be matted (but not framed) and may not be edited or altered except for minor color, contrast or sharpness. Photographers will be asked to sign a release giving ETHS permission to use the photos for advertising or publications. The photos can be dropped off to the Elk Township secretary at the former Scandia School on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings between 8 a.m. and noon. Other arrangements can also be made if necessary. Last date for submissions is July 8.
There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 13, at 7 p.m. to view the photos, celebrate the event and to present the awards and prizes being given for each category. Refreshments will be served. The winners will be selected by this year's three judges: Patricia Spicer, Carl Wolf and Steve Horsely. A special program will be featured during this opening reception. Scott Barrett, an alumnus of Scandia School (having attended from 1987 to 1991) will present a slide show of his numerous mountain climbing adventures. After beginning flying lessons at age 13 and receiving his pilot's license at age 17, he went on to earn a degree in aviation technology at Purdue University. He is now an airplane pilot for Chautauqua Airlines, flying with Frontier based in Denver, Colo. Along with his love of flying, he loves being outdoors to hike, bike and climb rocks and peaks such as Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest. Barrett's presentation is sure to delight the audience.
The People's Choice Awards will be given at the ETHS annual meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12. The public is invited to all of this year's special events.
