While school just ended, summer programs are gearing up.
The Warren County School District has announced that the Summer Lunch Program started on June 10.
The program, according to a press release from the district "provides children a nutritious meal during the summer months." It will be located at Youngsville Elementary/Middle School and Warren Area Elementary Center.
Any children under the age of 18 can be served at no charge between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Matt Jones, the school district's coordinator of grant and foundation development, said all students can participate regardless of household income.
"The program qualifies as an open site, meaning that 50 percent or more of the children residing in the areas served are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals," he explained.
Menus and dates of operation will be available on the district's website at www.wcsdpa.org. The service will be shortened during the week of July 4.
The program will run at WAEC through Aug. 19, while the YEMS program will end earlier on July 26. Last year, approximately 100 meals per day were served at WAEC and 39 meals per day were served at YEMS. Jones said that fewer official programs happen at YEMS over the summer which explains the difference in meals served.
The costs of the program are reimbursed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
"The cost of the meals is reimbursed be the state via the Summer Food Service Program," said Jones. "The charge from the district board of directors has been to ensure that the program remains budget neutral, with labor and food costs remaining within our reimbursement rate."
Dates and times for the program are subject to change. Any change to days of operation or times will be posted at both the school cafeteria and the district website.
"The district encourages everyone to tell friends, family and neighbors about it, talk about it at church, club meetings and other places, and take advantage of the program," the press release said.
