HERSHEY - The District 10 champion Dragons have met state champion Wyomissing in the first round of the PIAA Class AA team championships two straight years.
The opponents for Warren's D10 singles and doubles champions were just as brutal.
Warren District 10 champion and senior Shane Burns played Ricardo Saad for the second time this season and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to the Wyomissing player at the Hershey Racquet Club.
"Saad is a very good player who was a state finalist last year," said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. "He has won two rounds on Friday putting him in Saturday's semifinals.
Saad's Wyomissing teammate Andre Fick, who played Nate Sandberg at No. 3 singles last week in the PIAA team championships, also won two rounds today putting him among the final four as well.
Burns concludes his high school career having won two District 10 singles championships. The last Dragon to win the singles title was Jeff Nuhfer in 2007, and then Adam Bartsch in 1997 before him. Burns is the very first to win two singles titles.
Dragon senior Matt Sandberg and his sophomore brother Nate Sandberg completed their season bowing out to a very strong pair of seniors, 6-1, 6-2, representing Lancaster Country Day. The pair of Spencer Rhoads and Wes Davis won their second round Friday to move into Saturday's semifinals.
"They are a very strong team with strong serving and outstanding net play," said Bartsch.
Matt Sandberg completes his high school career winning two District 10 doubles championships, one with Thomas Pellegrino in 2012, and with his brother Nate this season.
"They did what they had to do," said Bartsch of Warren's season that included a Region 2 team championship, District 10 team championship, D10 singles and doubles titles, and PIAA first-round team win.
