Parenting workshop offered at JD Center
"A Family Feat" will offer a free parenting workshop from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center, Second Ave., Warren. The workshop will include simple tools, tips and techniques to help parents take the steps to becoming an exceptional family and some fun ideas for family times that will help them keep their sanity while their children are being entertained. Loranger will share art and craft projects, and parents will be able to get their hands dirty if they choose. Parents and guardians are encouraged to take their questions and their enthusiasm as they learn to accomplish "A Family Feat." Allegheny Center for the Arts and WCCBI are accepting photo submissions for the 2014 calendar for the months of March, April and May. Submissions can be sent to email@example.com before the deadline, which is June 1.
AOC on the move
On Thursday, May 16, the Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC) will ride bikes from Russell to North Warren and back. Participants will meet beside the Russell Post Office at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call Pat Spicer at 757-8331, evenings.
On Saturday, May 18, the AOC will kayak or canoe on Tionesta Creek from the Sheffield to Blue Jay Bridge. Participants should take their lunch and water and meet at the Sheffield Boat Launch at 10 a.m. Boat registration is required. On Sunday, May 19, the AOC will ride bikes 24 miles on the Sandy Creek Trail near Cranberry. This trail, which runs alongside Sandy Creek, is one of the prettiest bike rides in the state. A workbee will be held at Thompson Hill Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, followed by lunch at Zeke Stanton's home and the cemetery association's annual meeting.

Warren High School Class of 1944 will have lunch Thursday, May 16, at the Eagles Club, Pennsylvania Ave. E., Warren, with a get-together at 11:30 a.m. and lunch at noon. Spouses and significant others are welcome.
A rummage sale will be held May 16, 17 and 18 at Berea Lutheran Church, Rt. 6 at Rt. 958, from 9 a.m. -? each day. Items will be $1 per bag on Saturday.
55 Plus to meet
The 55 Plus Group of Emanuel United Church of Christ will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at the church. If weather is favorable, the group will go to Chapman State Park for a picnic. Participants should take picnic food and table service.
American Legion Auxiliary, Warren Unit 135, will give "Poppies" on May 17-18 for people to wear through Memorial Day in memory of our military, to show we care. A donation will be accepted but is not necessary. Auxiliary, post, SAL and social members of Post 135 are asked to sign up at the American Legion lounge for an available time and place to help distribute poppies. Volunteers will only need to work an hour.
Garden club to meet
Warren Garden Club general membership will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Ekey's Garden Center, 3800 Market St., North Warren. Linda Westover will introduce new annual and vegetable plants for 2013.
