Tidioute Community Charter School students participated in a mock accident on Thursday, May 2.
The accident was staged on McGuire near the intersection with First Street and Jefferson Street.
There were two vehicles involved, one vehicle was staged with a student behind the wheel with his friends in the car, the other vehicle driven by a member of the community. There were six victims in all.
The students played the part of the drinking teenagers, one was pronounced dead at the scene and another was flown to a nearby hospital. The only difference between this mock accident and the real thing is these students were not really hurt and the accident was only staged to appear like the real thing.
Tidioute Fire Department and ambulance were dispatched from their firehall. The average call takes a volunteer department about 10 minutes to get a unit on the way to the scene. EmergyCare Unit was also dispatched and Life Star Helicopter from Corry was dispatched. Also called to the scene was Jim Higgins, deputy coroner, Tidioute Borough Police Department and Warren County Sheriff Department.
These different agencies work together on several occasions and this Mock Accident not only served as a reminder to the students that they should not drink and drive but was a great drill for the agencies involved.
Deputy Charles Fetzeck of the Warren County Sheriff's Department played out the scene for those who were in attendance. Fetzeck stated that it took 13:46 minutes to extricate the first victim from the vehicle.
Fire department and ambulance personnel treated this as the real thing and used every precaution they could to prevent further complications.
Sheriff Ken Klakamp was on the scene as well as other members of his department.
Todd Steele, Director of Operation for EmergyCare was also at the scene to observe the made the arrangements for the Life Star helicopter to come in.
Mandie Engbert, SADD Director at Tidioute Community Charter School has some of her students paint their faces white and they wore a sign on their backs stating the time of death by a person as the result of a DUI related accident. These students were not permitted to speak to their fellow students and vice versa, representing the fact that were gone.
Since this program has started in Warren County there have not been any DUI teen-related accidents at prom time or graduation time.
During the mock qccident no one was actually hurt or killed.
