The Scandia one-room school, having served the needs of the community for more than 125 years, has been completely restored to its original 19th century appearance by community volunteers. Monthly open houses are held on second Saturday afternoons, when visitors may visit and use more than 100 years of enrollment records to research family genealogies. Private tours may be arranged. The society also features an Elk Township Heritage Museum, which is filled with artifacts from the era of the self-sustaining family farm.
The Elk Township Historical Society is a non-profit corporation located in Scandia, whose goal is to promote a clearer understanding of Elk Township history and its natural environment. Its purpose is to emphasize and preserve the importance of the one-room school in the development and implementation of democracy in America. The community center includes an extensive lending library with books and audio-visuals for all ages, all of which have been implemented by volunteers. The center includes indoor meeting rooms with a kitchen, an outdoor pavilion and a playground, which are available to clubs and organizations, and for family gatherings, such as showers and reunions.
The Elk Township Historical Society believes the new Warren Gives initiative offers an opportunity for a small non-profit, funded by memberships and donations, to have access to a wider community manner of fund raising, as well as to publicize their mission to a more extensive audience.

From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 8, the website www.warrengives.org will be open for donors to give to their favorite charities. The Elk Township Historical Society is supported by the Community Foundation of Warren County, the DeFrees Family Memorial Fund and the Sara Sokolski Memorial Fund which have gathered a $25,000 match to be distributed proportionately among the participating organizations at the end of the event.
