The Silver Winds Flute Choir's performance "Celebrate Spring" will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14. The free concert will be held at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, 444 Pennsylvania Ave. W., Warren.
"We are excited to share our music in this beautiful venue. There is a warmth and intimacy in the space that will enhance our theme, Celebrate Spring," said a choir spokesperson.
The program for this performance will include some familiar tunes that have been transcribed for flute choir as well as several pieces written specifically for flute choir. The most familiar classical transcription on the program will be the Goldfinch Concerto. The choir will perform two movements of this concerto, the andante and allegro. This flute choir arrangement captures the birdsong sounds of spring effectively. Additionally, the program will include transcriptions of Debussy's Sarabande, Brahm's Hungarian Dance, and McGinty's arrangement of Two Folk Songs by Bartok. Other pieces include Spanish inspired selections, Suite de Montagne by Catherine McMichael, and some popular selections to complete the program.

The Silver Winds Flute Choir is an ensemble consisting of six flutists from the region. This group grew from a core group of five musicians that began playing together six years ago. The group size has fluctuated over time with up to 10 flutists in the choir. The full complement of flutists allows the choir to perform a wide range of styles represented in the flute choir repertoire. Silver Winds performs using the C-flute, piccolo, alto and bass flute. This instrumentation is one many audience members experience for the first time at a flute choir performance.
Active member musicians are skilled amateurs, professionals and teachers all sharing a love of flute music. The musical experiences of the flutists, both past and present, include performances in the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Flute Choir of Atlanta, Atlanta Flute Ensemble, Gannon University Adult Flute Choir, Connecticut National Guard and Washington DC Army Reserve Band, Presque Isle Flute Choir, Warren Civic Orchestra, Marietta Symphony on the Square (GA), Warren Players theater orchestra, Light Stings and Air (flute/guitar duo), and small ensembles in local venues at weddings and receptions. Players also teach privately, perform in church and act as worship music leaders.
Silver Winds Flute Choir offers two concerts annually as well as "Flutes in the Garden," an outdoor summer concert in the Warren State Hospital gazebo. Additionally, the choir has performed in the Warren Festival of the Arts, at Warren River Jam, with the Warren Civic Orchestra, and for the Unitarian Universalist Salon Series in Jamestown, N.Y. Silver Winds performs locally for residents at nursing homes, the state hospital, and senior citizen centers, and churches. For more information, call Becky Darbee at 688-2054.
