Thomas C. Nelson, 68, of Fiddler Hill Rd., Youngsville, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He died at his residence, surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Tom was born December 16, 1944 in Warren, son to the late C. Raymond and Mary E. (Rapp) Nelson. He served on the USS Boxer for the United States Navy and was deployed to Vietnam twice.
While in the Navy, Tom was part of the retrieval of the first Apollo space vessel. After his service, Tom went to work at the National Forge Co. and the Ellwood Crankshaft, retiring in 2007.
He was a member of the AmVets Post #50 in Sugar Grove, the Corry VFW, the Warren Moose and Eagles Clubs; he also was a Post member and past Commander of the Youngsville Legion Post 658. Tom enjoyed listening to classic gold country music, camping, boating, hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and cooking for his family and friends. Tom was an avid sports fan; he enjoyed following the Steelers, Pirates, and the NASCAR teams of Bill Elliott and later on Carl Edwards. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his caring wife of 48 years, Peggy (Kellogg) Nelson, whom he married in January 1965 in Garland. They have two daughters, Cathy (Butch) Southwell of Warren, and Suanne (Fred) Beardsley of Youngsville. Tom is also survived by his sister Sue (Bob) Coons of Pittsfield, and his brother George (Kathy) Nelson of Youngsville. In addition, he leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Paula Southwell and Kirsten and Jared Beardsley.
Friends will be received on Monday, April 1, from 47 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 314 N. Main St, in Youngsville. A funeral service will be held there on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Ewing, pastor of the First Lutheran Church in Warren, officiating. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park. Members of the Youngsville American Legion Honor Guard will provide full military honors.
