LAKEWOOD, N.Y. - Playing at the Lakewood YMCA, the Warren Dragons boys tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 5-0 victory over the Harbor Creek Huskies.
Shane Burns improved to 2-0 on the season with a clean 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Huskies' top player, Trevor Osborne. The singles sweep was completed by a pair of nice wins by the Sandberg brothers - senior Matt and sophomore Nathan.
At second singles, Matt Sandberg faced a persistent Hunter Kelly and won a hard-fought 7-5, 6-1 victory. The younger Sandberg, Nathan, had little trouble disposing of Harbor Creek's Nick Hesch, 6-0, 6-2.
"The boys played good bread-and-butter singles. They weren't flashy, but got the job accomplished in an efficient manner," said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch.
According to Bartsch, Warren's top doubles duo of Grayson Foley and Nick Tarpenning were "aggressive and dominant" with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first doubles. At second doubles, Ylli Bakalli and Liam Boger were 6-0, 6-3 winners.
"Our doubles teams came to play tonight and we were dominant," said Bartsch.
In exhibition play, seniors Conner Clendenon and Nathan Schultz scored an impressive victory. Also winning was freshman Tristan Boger in an exhbition singles match.
Warren (2-0) returns to the court Wednesday when it visits Sharon.
