2nd Amendment

March 11, 2013
The Times Observer

Dear editor:

A correspondent Tuesday quoted the Second Amendment and then asked, "What part of this do you people not understand?"

I don't understand how people can interpret the thoughts of the authors of the amendment. When that was written, the authors knew muskets, cannons, and, OK, crude bombs (bursting in air model 1). Would they have been so free with their language had they known about machine guns, rocket launchers, land mines, even helicopter gunships and nuclear missiles? As you point out, the language says 'arms'; it doesn't say 'arms up to.'

It's a wonder the NRA hasn't tried to expand the envelope to allow hand grenades. They would be great for clearing out that burglar you heard downstairs.

Pete Westover,

Warren
