It is good news that someone has stepped forward to carry on the Music in the Park program this summer at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Warren.
For 14 years (except for one when Streetscape's construction intervened) local musicians have been bringing audiences to the park on Friday nights, giving people another reason to gather and relax downtown.
Rod Welling has big shoes to fill.
Jim and Frankie Zavinski had spearheaded an effort to renovate the park, which had fallen into some decrepitude through years of neglect. As the work was paying off, they recognized the place as a venue for a community event, and Music in the Park was born.
Since then, Warren residents, some with lawn chairs in their mitts, have descended upon the park on balmy summer nights to simply kick back and enjoy the music and the scenery. It's a lovely little park overlooking the Allegheny River and within a short stroll from a number of eating and drinking establishments which would be more than happy to offer a late-night nosh or nightcap.
If you compensate for the scale, Music in the Park is to Warren what summer concerts in Central Park are to New Yorkers.
We wish Mr. Welling good luck and look forward to the first concert on June 7 at 8 p.m.
