This is where it all begins.
The District Class AA wrestling postseason gets underway this Friday and Saturday with the Section 1-AA Tournament at Union City Area High School.
A total of 20 Eisenhower Knights and Youngsville Eagles will participate at the section level and each have the same goal in mind. That goal - to finish among the top four in their respective weight classes and advance to next weekend's D-10 Class AA Wrestling Championships at Sharon Area High School.
Youngsville’s Jaykup Durlin, top
Of the 10 Eagles making the trip, seven of them are seeded among the top four and thus favored to advance to Sharon. That list of seven includes one top seed in 220-pound junior Jaykup Durlin and one two seed in 182-pound junior Stone Sivak.
Durlin (26-2) receives a bye directly into the semifinals and could win a section title by winning just two matches. Durlin, who is trying to qualify for districts for the second straight year, will open with the winner of Friday's quarterfinal bout between Seneca's Tory Pusateri and Corry's Tim Suydan. Suydan wrestled for the Eagles two years ago while Durlin was just a freshman.
Sivak (19-9) will also wrestle a familiar face in former teammate Alex Suydan of Corry. Sivak is looking for his first trip to Sharon and will meet Suydan in the quarterfinal round at 182 pounds.
Seeded third for Youngsville are a pair of district qualifiers from a season ago - 138-pound sophomore Aaron Hoover and 170-pound junior Jeremy Lyon. Hoover advanced to regionals during his freshman campaign.
Hoover (16-11) will wrestle Eisenhower's Graham Johnson in the quarterfinals and his bracket also includes former teammate Hunter Proctor. Proctor is wrestling for Corry this season after qualifying for districts with the Eagles in each of the past two years. Lyon (13-7) draws Fort LeBoeuf senior Jack Middleton is opening bout.
Rounding out the seeded wrestlers for Youngsville are four seeds Chester Ciukaj (120), Zach Ishman (160) and Austin Slocum (285). Ciukaj (13-14) wrestlers Corry freshman Jonathan Hammond in the quarterfinals, Ishman (15-11) opens with Saegertown senior Andrew Boylan and Slocum (9-15) faces a familiar face in Ike senior Dylan Raines.
"Our goal is to get as many kids through as possible," said Youngsville coach Scott Ishman. I think everyone has a good shot as making it to districts. They just have to wrestle their best."
The Knights have four seeded wrestlers, but two of those are top seeds in 126-pound senior Jeb Fedorchuk and 145-pound freshman Louie Head. Other seeded Knights include Steven Haner - a third seed at 113 pounds - and Jake Johnson who is seeded third at 195 pounds.
Fedorchuk compiled a 22-6 mark this season while earning the top spot in the 126-pound bracket. He will face the winner of a preliminary bout between Corry's Mark May and Seneca's Steve Shroup in the quarterfinals. Fedorchuk is chasing his third trip to districts after qualifying during his freshman and junior campaigns.
Head has opened a lot of eyes with his first year efforts at Eisenhower. The fantastic freshman won 21 matches while losing just eight this season and finds himself as the top seed at 145 pounds. Head's first match will be a quarterfinal showdown with Corry sophomore Josh Silka.
At 113 pounds, the third seeded Haner is hoping to punch his first ticket to Sharon. Waiting for Haner (17-11) in the quarterfinals is sixth seeded Bingbong Elizon of Saegertown. Elizon, a sophomore, is 11-18 this year.
Johnson is hoping to join an exclusive club this weekend by qualifying for districts for the fourth time in his outstanding career. Seeded third, Johnson is 22-5 during his senior year, but faces a stiff test in the quarterfinal round. There, Johnson will need to get past Fort LeBoeuf sophomore Garrett Reinwald (20-11) to punch his ticket to the semifinals.
"The first thing we're telling the guys is regular season is over," said Ike coach Kiel Woodburn. "Everybody there is 0-0. It's a whole new season. No matter what they have achieved or not achieved, it really doesn't mean anything.
"Honestly, like we've said, I'm going to be really happy if every single one of my guys goes out there and leaves everything they have on the mat. If he's put every effort he has into it, that's all I expect. There's no number I'm thinking of (of district qualifiers). That's going to all fall into place."
Wrestling begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday and resumes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning with the championship semifinals and consolations. The parade of champions is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the championship and consolation finals beginning at 6 p.m.
