It's a nice feather in his cap.
Warren's Jeff Zaffino recently earned his first Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) regional Player of The Year honor, earning the Central Region's award for the 2012 season. Zaffino collected five top-three finishes during the Central Region season, including a pair of wins, a runner-up finish and a third-place.
The award is selected by PBA region tournament directors, but based mainly on points and money earned - of which Zaffino was the 2011 points leader, as well as tournament wins.
Zaffino won his 19th career PBA regional championship on August 11 at the Central Region Boss Snow Plows/Track Open at PinHeads Bowling Center in Fishers, Ind. before winning his 20th title just three weeks later at the East Region Strike Zone Senior Open in Pottsville.
Other 2012 victories included the Central/Midwest Region Eastown Recreation Center Open held in Jasper, Ind. in February and the PBA Central Region Fourth Annual Victory Lanes Senior Open held in April in Galion, Ohio.
While Zaffino was in the running for the Central Region Player of the Year in 2011, and didn't win, he got off to a good start and "every year it's a goal," he said.
"I had a pretty good year," he said.
If he has a bigger goal, it would be to win a regular tour title.
"You always want to win the big title," said Zaffino, 53, who has been on the PBA Tour since 1994. "I have had three chances at it (by being in the finals of a PBA Tour event). Now that the (PBA Senior Tour) is out there and my body hasn't fallen completely apart, it's (a realistic) goal."
