SWIMMING: Warren sweeps on record-setting night

January 15, 2013
By ALLEN SEYBERT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Warren's boys 200 medley relay team established Warren swimming's first new record since the 2007 season during a dominating sweep of Erie East Monday at the Warren County YMCA.

The Warren boys (4-2) handled the visiting Warriors by a 140-19 count while the Lady Dragons evened their record at 3-3 with a 138-14 win.

The talk of the night was the record-setting performance by the boys 200 medley relay team of Logan Gearhart, Bennett Steber, Brad Walters and Cameron Daniels. The old record - set by Brian Collins, Mitch Kelly, Adrian Shodi and Tyler Unen in 2005 - was 1:58.76. Tonight's winning time was 1:57.96.

Record’s going down
Warren’s Brad Walters swims his leg of the boys 200 medley relay during Monday’s swim meet with Erie East at the Warren County YMCA. Walters teamed with Logan Gearhart, Bennett Steber and Cameron?Daniels to set a new school record in the event with a swim of 1:57.96, erasing the 2005 record of 1:58.76 set by Brian Collins, Mitch Kelly, Adrian Shodi and Tyler Unen.

"To set the first record since 2007 is definitely exciting for the team," said Warren assistant coach Brian Collins - himself a member of the former record holders. "It's especially encouraging because they aren't even where we think they can be yet."

Each member of the record-setting team would add additional victories throughout the evening. Gearhart won the 400 free and also teamed with Clark Eason, John Kylander and Liam Boger to claim victory in the 200 free relay.

Steber was victorious in the 200 IM and 100 breast, Daniels won both the 50 and 100 free events and Walters added wins in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Also winning for the Dragon boys on Monday were Wyatt Pierson in the 200 free and the 400 free relay team of Eason, Christian Olson, Quinn Boger and Pierson.

"Clark Eason is really coming along after just switching to swimming from diving," added Collins. "Brad Walters is also getting stronger in the butterfly. We changed his stroke almost completely before the season and he's getting closer to where we'd like to see him."

On the girls side, senior Ellis Beardsley had a dominating night in the pool, winning all four of her events. Individually, Beardsley won the 200 free and 100 free before teaming with Mandy Fehlman, Elin Smith and Anna Falvo to win the 200 medley relay and with Lexie Gee, Lacey Grinnen and Fehlman to win the 400 free relay.

Smith would add wins in the 400 free and 100 back, Falvo victories in the 200 IM and 100 breast and Fehlman a win in the 100 fly. Christine Kuzminski earned a win in the 50 free and Allie Sedon added a victory in diving to a 200 free relay win with Lilya Renner, Alexis Vavala and Megan Waterfield.

"Elin is just a second and a half off the pool record in the 100 back," said Collins. "Anna Falvo is also progressing nicely in the breaststroke after also largely changing her stroke before the season. It was also nice to see Christine Kuzminski pick up a strong win in the 50 free."

The Dragons will likely face stiffer competition Thursday when the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers visit the Warren County YMCA. Thursday's meet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
