GIRLS HOOPS: Cruise control

Lady Eagles roll to second win

January 15, 2013
By ALLEN SEYBERT and BEN OVIATT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

A county rivalry was renewed Monday night with the Youngsville Lady Eagles traveling to the other side of the county to square off with the Tidioute Charter Lady Bulldogs.

It's safe to say Youngsville enjoyed the reunion more than the hosts, rolling to a 62-6 victory at Tidioute Community Charter School.

Youngsville (2-9) scored half of its total points in a torrid opening quarter, taking a commanding 31-2 lead after the opening eight minutes. The Lady Eagles had 50 points by halftime - already eclipsing the team's season-high for an entire game (48).

Katie Chuzie and Kennedy Cratty led the Lady Eagles' charge with 18 points apiece. Katelyn Mallie, Jorie Clark and Karissa Cratty all finished with six points each for the winners.

Tidioute dropped to 0-8 with the loss. Aubrey Sonney scored four points to lead the Bulldogs' effort and Casey Byers added two points.

Youngsville also won the junior varsity outing, 41-12. Clark led the Eagles with 15 points in that contest while Tanya Krouse's eight points was tops for Tidioute.

Sheffield 40,

North Clarion 36

They say it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

The Lady Wolverines proved that theory to be true Monday night, using a 19-4 fourth quarter advantage to defeat visiting North Clarion, 40-36, at Sheffield Area High School.

Trailing 32-21 at the end of the third quarter, Sheffield stormed out of the gate with a 14-0 run to start the fourth. That run included eight points from Wolverines sophomore Tierra Hansen. Ashley Davidson went three-of-four from the foul line in the game's final minute and Hannah Vile grabbed a rebound from a missed free throw and put it back in the hoop to secure the win for the Lady Wolverines (6-7).

"We started a little sluggish," said Sheffield girls coach Jeff Labesky. "Last year, this team would have folded, but we played with spirit and confidence and got the win."

Hansen and Abby Labesky paced a balanced Wolverines attack with 11 points each, Davidson finished with eight points and Jen Isenberg finished with six points.

"They came out in a box-and-one on Jen (Isenberg), so we pounded the ball inside. It takes more than one to win a game and tonight we used all five," added Labesky.

Kelsey Schmader scored a game-high 18 points for North Clarion, with 15 of those points coming in the first half.

The Lady Wolverines face another tough test Wednesday night when they host Port Allegany.

North Clarion topped Sheffield in a close junior varsity contest, 27-26. Mariah Fitzgerald led Sheffield with 12 points and Hansen added 11 markers for the Lady Wolverines.

Saegertown 51, Eisenhower 19

SAEGERTOWN - Playing its fourth game in six nights, Eisenhower just ran out of fresh legs during a 51-19 loss to Saegertown Monday at Saegertown High School.

"We just looked very tired," said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. "Playing as many games as we have recently looked like it was taking its toll tonight."

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lady Knights, but still leaves them above the .500 mark for the 2012-13 season with six wins to only five losses.

Two days after scoring a season-high 18 points in a win over Titusville, Ike's Alyssa Peterson was held to five points by a stingy Panthers defense. Taylor Haner led the Knights in scoring for the first time this season with six points.

According to Logue, Halie VanOrd added three rebounds and a pair of steals and Danielle Bradish chipped in three steals.

Saegertown won the junior varsity contest, 43-17. Haylie Birt led Eisenhower with six points in the loss.

Eisenhower will try to get back on the winning track Wednesday when it travels to AC Valley.
