Varsity slate

Here is the varsity slate of action for county winter sports teams for Wednesday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 11:

Unanimous victory
Warren’s Anthony Durnell improved his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record to 12-4 with a unanimous decision victory over Kentucky’s Jeremy Pender on Dec. 29 at the Pinnacle Fighting Championships (PFC) Series 1 in Southpointe (Canonsburg). Prior to the fight, Pender was ranked as the number four bantamweight (135-pound) fighter, according to gatewaymma.com, a leading source for MMA news in the Midwest. The bout was sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission. Durnell has verbally committed to an April 20 bout under the PFC banner out of Pittsburgh. There, he will fight undefeated pro and rising sport star Anthony Morgan of Tennessee.

FRIDAY'S SCHEDULE

Wrestling: Sheffield at Port Allegany, 6 p.m.

Eisenhower at Falconer Tournament, 3 p.m.

Rescheduled

The Youngsville at Harbor Creek varsity wrestling match originally scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed. The match will be made up on Friday, January 25 at Harbor Creek High School. Junior varsity matches will begin at 6:30 p.m. with varsity matches to follow.

Youth mat

Local members of North East's Ragin' Raisins wrestling club competed at the 2013 NYWAY Kickoff Classic this past weekend at Niagara Community College in Sanborn, N.Y.

The tournament featured over 400 wrestlers from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio.

Russell's Gannon Jaquay delivered a third-place finish in the 7-8 year-old, 65-pound weight class while older brother Logan Jaquay was fourth in the 9-10 year-old, 65-pound weight class.
