GIRLS HOOPS: Most Wanted: Warren girls win tourney title

December 29, 2012
The Times Observer

SENECA - "It means a lot," said Warren coach Lisa Ruhlman of her team's 59-40 Cranberry Tournament championship game win over Cranberry on Friday.

"We had this circled on our calendars," she said.

Warren was up at halftime over Cranberry at last year's tournament before the hosts stormed back to win with a big second half.

"It's been a goal of ours since we didn't accomplish it last year," said Ruhlman, who added that Cranberry's history in girls basketball makes this a big win in itself.

Leading 41-35 after three quarters, the Lady Dragons wouldn't be denied this year.

"They just hunkered down (in an 18-5 fourth quarter)," said Ruhlman. "I really think our conditioning came into play. They just played hard, big and strong. It was the first game we played (well) all 32 minutes."

Senior Jaimie Eaton surpassed 1,000 career points in Thursday's opening-round win over Westinghouse, and added 26 points, including 10-of-12 at the free throw line, six assists and seven steals on Friday. She was named tournament MVP and to the all-tourney team with 47 points in two games.

Senior teammate Taylor Mineweaser added 14 points Friday and was named the all-tournament team as Defensive Player of the Tournament.

Freshman D.J. Hahn was named the tourney's Most Promising Young Player.

"Overall, it was a total team effort," said Ruhlman. "Everyone did their job."

Alexa Bupp had nine rebounds and Paige Wilson added seven rebounds for Warren (7-0), which hosts McDowell on Saturday.

The Lady Dragons held Cranberry leading scorers Emily Merryman and Sune Swart below their scoring averages, Ruhlman said.

DUKE CENTER - Sheffield will play for the championship trophy of the Otto-Eldred Tournament after knocking off the host Terrors, 51-37, on the opening night of action Friday at Otto-Eldred High School.

"The third quarter was the difference in the game for us tonight," said Sheffield girls coach Jeff Labesky. "We were able to extend a four-point lead to 14 points. We didn't shoot very well at the free-throw line tonight. We probably could've made things a little easier on us had we done that."

Sheffield trailed 8-7 after the first quarter, but had built a 20-16 edge before halftime. Out of the gate in the third quarter, the Wolverines turned up the pressure and were able to push the lead to as many as 18 points.

Jen Isenberg paced a balanced Sheffield attack with 17 points. Abby Labesky added 12 points of her own, Hannah Vile added nine points and Ashley Davidson finished with seven points.

The Wolverines (3-3) will look for the tournament crown at 5 p.m. Saturday when they square off with Kane. Kane beat Oswayo Valley on Friday and defeated Sheffield, 70-43, earlier this month.
