"It was back around the Y2K era and the world was supposed to end," laughed John Beard as he recalled the first Warren New Year's Day Dive back in 2000. "So we decided to go into the water and if we came back up and civilization was still there, great! And it was."
On New Year's Day 2013, Beard and other divers from the area will jump into the Allegheny River around 3 p.m. for the 10th gathering of the dive.

In their tenth New Years Day Dive, local divers will plunge into frosty 34 degree waters to secure their bragging rights for the year. John Beard (front left) is in charge of organizing the dive that will occur around 4 p.m. by the Hickory Street Bridge. Lasting up to 45 minutes, the divers look forward to scouring the river for interesting sights.
