I am thankful the victims of super storm Sandy are receiving relief from the devastation that so many families have suffered. Support from entertainers; with the 121212 concert, was monumental in the raising of contributions. In fact, money is expected to be pouring in for next several weeks. This positive behavior from the American public makes me proud to be an American.
Locally, help from "the powers that be", was not so generous. I have been a business owner in the Warren area for the past 38 years. Located along Jackson Run creek, I can attest that flood water is a continuous threat: particularly with recent development in the area. Commissioner John Eggleston states, "You are in a flood way, you should expect this". Dairy Queen has been at this location since 1952; it wasn't declared a flood area till the mid 80's. During my tenure at DQ, we have thus far survived with sand bags, employee sweat, and welcomed volunteers; partially the North Warren Fire Dept.
During Storm Sandy, we had a sand truck on stand by, but we needed sand bags. Warren County Public Safety stated, "Theirs where for life threats only, go on line and order your own." This wasn't what we wanted to hear as the creek was beginning to climb its banks. We then called upon the County Commissioners office. Commissioner Eagleton's response was, "you're in a flood way we won't life a finger to help you or provide any volunteers." I was shocked by his lack of compassion. Fortunately, we were spared this time, but I would suggest Warren County Public Safety to lay in a supply of sand bags to sell to potential victims. If local attitudes are not changed and the municipality doesn't become more prepared; maybe next time Warren will find its self up the proverbial creek.
