GIRLS HOOPS: Region wins: Dragons, Knights battle to region wins

December 21, 2012
The Times Observer

ERIE - Warren's girls basketball team is 5-0 after a 53-17 win in its Region 6 opener on Thursday.

It looks like an easy win on paper, but it didn't feel that way I'm sure.

"It's been a while since we had a good, hard physical game," said Warren coach Lisa Ruhlman, "so it was really good for them to get that. It was a battle. It was a very physical game, and I'd like to see my girls continue to play hard and not back down."

Warren led 11-0 after one quarter.

"Offensively, we struggled a little at times tonight, but I was really happy with the defense," said Ruhlman.

Jaimie Eaton finished with 21 points, including 9-of-14 at the free throw line, six assists and four steals in the win. Freshman Paige Wilson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Brittany Merenick had seven rebounds, and Alexa Bupp six steals.

Meghan Loutzenhiser "really stepped up in a physical game," said Ruhlman.

"It was nice to be home," said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue, whose Knights are 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 3.

That's when Kristen Williams sank 3-of-4 free throws and Ike held on to win.

Conneaut 52, Youngsville 32

Youngsville led Class AAA Conneaut deep into the second half, but ultimately depth and pressure defense go the best of the Lady Eagles during a 52-32 Conneaut victory Thursday at Youngsville High School.

Youngsville (0-5) jumped out to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter on the strength of three pointers by Karissa Cratty, Katie Chuzie and Jessica Jameson. That lead held up until the midway point of the second quarter when both Chuzie and Kelsey Anderson were relegated to the bench with three fouls.

The foul trouble allowed Conneaut to seize control of the contest in the final three minutes of the half, taking a 21-18 lead into the locker room.

That momentum rolled into the second half with the visitors holding a commanding 19-6 advantage in the third quarter, allowing them to cruise down the stretch.

Karissa Cratty had a huge game for the Eagles with 15 points. Kennedy Cratty finished with eight points and Jameson added five. Challen Litwiler and Kristen Baker did most of the damage for Conneaut, scoring 20 and 19 points respectively.

Youngsville is off until holiday tournament time when it competes in the Union City Tournament.

Conneaut was a 34-14 winner in the junior varsity contest. Katelyn Maille scored six points to pace Youngsville.
