WRESTLING: Warren wins region match at Central

December 21, 2012
The Times Observer

ERIE - After a disappointing loss to Central Tech on Tuesday, Warren was back in Erie on Thursday, and back on the winning track with a better effort at East.

"We wrestled pretty well tonight," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger, whose Dragons are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 4.

D.J. Fehlman started things off with a pin at 132 pounds to stay unbeaten, and Warren never trailed in the match.

Even in losses - just two on the mat - Warren looked good, said Baldensperger. Jonah Hordusky trailed 4-3 at 138 pounds before taking a risk and was decisioned. Later, Alex Streich lost his first match in a 4-3 decision at 220 pounds. Ed Rickerson was pinned at heavyweight in his first varsity match.

In wins, Mike Card (145), Cody Gunn (160), Derek Reagle (170), Chris McNeal (182) and Seth Johnson (120) earned pins for Warren.

McNeal and Fehlman are each 9-0 on the year.

Union City 37, Eisenhower 36

UNION CITY - It doesn't matter how you slice it, this was a difficult loss.

Thursday's varsity wrestling match between Eisenhower and Union City ended in a virtual tie at 36-36, but the host Bears were ultimately awarded a bonus point and the victory after finishing ahead of the Knights on the sixth tiebreaking criteria - most accumulated near falls.

"It's a hard way to lose a match," said Ike wrestling coach Kiel Woodburn. "I feel bad for the guys because they're the ones pouring their blood and swat into this season. To have it come down to such a close finish and to not have it go in our favor is pretty hard."

Eisenhower got off to a nice start at 195 pounds where Jake Johnson pinned the Bears' Jacob Beck at the 3:00 mark of the bout. However, the next four weight classes were all won by Union City via pinfall.

Trailing 24-6, the Knights came to life, winning five of the next six weight classes.

Ike 120-pounder Steven Haner and 126-pounder Jeb Fedorchuk started the run with pins of their Union City opponents. Tyler Gourley then won a 7-3 decision at 138 pounds, Richard Knisley a 9-4 decision at 145 pounds and Louie Head had a quick pin at 152 pounds.

Perhaps what hurt the Knights more than anything else was having to take a forfeit at 160 pounds.

The Bears followed the forfeit with a decision win at 170 pounds and led 36-30 with one match remaining.

The Knights' Cade Hefferman did everything he could to keep the Knights alive, pinning his opponent in 2:20 and forcing the tiebreaking rules to go into effect.

Unfortunately for the Knights, the tiebreaker ended in Union City's favor.

The Knights have over a week off before they return to the mat, competing in the Warren Duals on December 28.

Fort LeBoeuf 69, Youngsville 6

WATERFORD - Things didn't go well for the Youngsville wrestling team during Thursday's match at Fort LeBoeuf, as the Bison won a 69-6 decision.

Aaron Hoover, battling sickness, wrestled a strong match for the Eagles at 138 pounds, pinning Fort LeBoeuf's Nick Steiner in 1:27.

The night's other highlight was Jaykup Durlin at 220 pounds. Durlin wrestled Fort LeBoeuf standout Evan Daley - who has already signed to wrestle at Division I Clarion - and battled until the bitter end before dropping a 3-2 decision.

"Most teams going against a powerhouse like Fort LeBoeuf are very timid and these guys weren't," said Youngsville coach Scott Ishman. "Aaron wrestled very well despite battling illness and Jaykup was incredible in his match. I think he proved he's not just a 220-pounder, but he's one of the top 220 pounders."

The Eagles return to the mat December 28 at the Warren Duals.
