Talk about stepping up. Senior Matt Sandberg's exploits are seen in a video posted on Facebook - hitting a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to help Warren defeat McDowell, 77-75, on Tuesday, and sending the Flannel Panel student section at WAHS into a frenzy near the Dragon bench. It breaks a four-game losing streak to the Quad-A Trojans. He scored 29 points, and is averaging 16.75 points over a 4-0 Warren start. For Warren Area High School swimmer Elin Smith, a McDowell meet is an early preview of the District 10 Class AAA Championships at season's end. On Monday, the sophomore won the 100-meter backstroke against McDowell in 1:10.89, and is fast approaching her school records in the 100-meter and 100-yard backstroke. Assistant coach Brian Collins thinks she can be the first female from Warren to go below a minute in the 100-yard back. Smith came from behind to also win the 200-meter individual medley vs. McDowell. Sandberg and Smith are the Times Observer Athletes of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
