Toys for Tots Drive

Santa sale
The Sugar Grove Elementary School held it’s Annual Santa Sale this week. Students had the opportunity to shop and wrap gifts for the holidays. Pictured here are Catelyn, Ashley, and Michelle assisting with wrapping all the secret gifts.

The Sugar Grove Fire Department recently held a Toys for Tots drive and asked their Bingo participants to donate items to the Toys for Tots Christmas Drive. On November 11th the Fire Department began collecting for the drive. There is still time if you would like to donate. The Fire Hall will be accepting money donations as well as toy donations for the Toys for Tots through the Christmas Walk event on Friday, December 14th. Thank you to all our Bingo players who made donations of toys.

Christmas Walk

The 4th Annual Sugar Grove Christmas Walk is happening tonight. Beginning at 5 p.m., Sugar Grove businesses and groups are coming together again this year to make a memorable evening for children of all ages. Flyers titled, "It's a Sugar Grove Christmas" are located in various business throughout town with maps of events happening through out the town for the event.

Visitors will see all the decorated and living windows, take part in the merchant drawings and giveaways, enjoy music of the season, see art exhibits, live animals and more. Dress warm and walk through the beautifully decorated town and visit the merchants through the borough for a variety of Christmas fun and activities. Live music for the evening will be in various places throughout the town.

Santa will be arriving on Fire Truck with the SGVFD in the Sugar Grove Park at 5 p.m. AMVETS Post #50 will also have costumed characters in the park and throughout town to visit with you. The AMVETS hot dog stand will be operating in the park for those who want to enjoy a great grilled hot dog. Hebner's Town Styling will have refreshments and store specials. Wilcox Brothers will be a hub of activity in the center of town featuring their windows with art work from the SGES Grade school students and EMHS art students. The EMHS Fantasia Choir will be singing holiday favorites on the porch and you can take part in refreshments provided by the Warren County Dairy Princess and court. Erickson's Massage Therapy can massage away that holiday stress. Just stop by the massage chair that will be set up inside the store. Catering Plus will also have holiday cookies decorating demonstrations and you can watch for the American Legion Post #758 holiday window displays and a special glass blowing exhibition in front of the store.

The Bear Lake Church, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts Troop 17, PNC Bank, Presbyterian Church, Red Apple and Schulyers will all be serving holiday goodies. At The Town and County Food Center you will find holiday face painting, temporary tattoos and cookies, as well as the Salvation Army. Stop by the Bucket Cafe for treat bags, take part in the Children's holiday contest, and view their holiday painted windows. Enjoy the sounds of the Free Methodist Church singing carols from the Bucket Balcony. Everyone is welcome to join in and sing along. On Main Street, Linda's Floral will have live music and refreshments, the OutPost will have Hot Chocolate and Cider with free mugs to go, and Bob's Discount store will have refreshments and in-store specials. Stop by the end of Main Street in the triangle to watch the United Methodist Church perform their play, "If Sugar Grove was Bethlehem".

Mrs. Claus will be at the Sugar Grove Library to meet and greet with children and there will be a Christmas ornament and card projects for guests to complete. There is fun planned for both children and adults. Mrs. Claus will be reading books and you can listen while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate.

If you stop by the Sugar Grove Borough Building you can hop on a Bill Gourley Hay Ride throughout the town. The Sugar Grove Laundromat will have special ChrisAnn Crafts, a holiday drawing and refreshments. Darling's Pharmacy is holding a Children's Coloring Contest through December and the final drawing will be at 6:30 p.m. during the walk.

Community lunches

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend one of the area Community lunches. Each month lunch is held on the 1st Friday at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run Road. On the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Race street and Jamestown Street in the center of town . On the 3rd Wednesday of each month the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church will hold their luncheon. All are welcome to attend and take part.

SGES Cookbooks

The SGES parent organization is beginning work on its Sugar Grove Elementary Cook Book to be printed in the spring. At this time, we want to remind all parents to not wait and get your recipes in. Please remember to include your child's name and grade with your recipe entries. You can also email recipes in to the cookbook committee by sending them to chefrita2010@gmail.com. Reminder the kindergarten class is sending in recipes for desserts, cookies, and candies. The first grade students are sending in breads and roll recipes. The second grade is sending in main dish recipes. The third grade students are sending in appetizers and beverages. The fourth grade students are sending in soups, stews, chili and salads. The fifth grade students are sending in vegetable and side dish recipes. If you would like to submit recipes that are not in your child's grade that would be great also. The more the merrier.

WCSD schedule

The Holiday break will begin on Monday, Dec. 24, and continue through Jan. 1. School will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Red Kettle campaign

The local churches will once again be ringing the bell for the local Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign throughout the holiday season. The kettle will once again be located outside of the Town and Country Food Center. Each weekend the Kettle was manned by volunteers. The Red Kettle Campaign helps raise donations for those who need it most by providing toys for kids, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry, and countless other programs.

Food pantry

The Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church located at 210 Jamestown Street is the host site for the Northern part of Warren County for this program. Second Harvest is the major supplier of food to charitable agencies throughout Northwestern Pennsylvania.

They obtain products from the organization's warehouse and distribute them to individuals and families facing hard times in 11 counties. The next Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry will be held on Saturday, Dec.15, opening at 8:30 a.m.

Pearl Harbor Day

In remembrance of Pearl harbor Day, December 7th, AMVETS World War II members were honored at a dinner celebration hosted by the AMVETS Post #50, AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary and the Sons of AMVETS.

Benefit concert

A group of local bands is coming together to play in a benefit event to raise money for the local Sugar Grove Food Pantry. Saturday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. the bands Days of Old, Hi-Fidelity, Beyond the Illusion, Fallen out of Favor and Hearts Like Riots will gather at the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church Gymnasium to play. The cost to enter to hear all bands is $5. All proceeds will go toward purchasing food for the local Sugar Grove Food Pantry. There will also be refreshments on hand for purchase as well as door prizes. For more information on the event ,contact (814) 489-3105.
