SWIMMING: Dragon swimmers split with Bradford

BRADFORD - Warren opened with a split at Bradford on Tuesday afternoon, but both teams looked strong to start the season, according to coaches.

Warren's boys team earned seven first-place finishes in a 110-55 win. Cameron Daniels won two individual (50 and 100 free) and was part of two winning relays. Bennett Steber (100 breaststroke), Brad Walters (100 butterfly) and Logan Gearhart (200 free) also had individual first-place finishes and joined Daniels on two winning relays.

"They looked great, as a team," said Warren assistant coach Brian Collins. "Both medley relay teams looked beautiful. They are coming together, and have made huge progress so far."

Collins said it's too early to look at District 10 qualifying times, but a couple of swimmers had solid times despite learning new stroke techniques.

"Brad Walters finished strong in the 100 fly; he's been working on a new stroke technique that he just learned (Tuesday morning)," said Collins. "Bennett Steber just learned (a new) breaststroke (technique) this morning."

John Kylander had a strong finish to hold off a Bradford swimmer for second place in the 100 breast.

"The girls, unfortunately, lost a lot of close races," said Warren assistant coach Jill Bunce, "but it's still early in the season and we're hopeful because they looked strong."

Ellis Beardsley took first place in the 100 free, Elin Smith in the 100 back and Anna Falvo in the 100 breaststroke for Warren, which lost 100-67.

Bunce said Warren was strong behind Beardsley in the 100 free, including Lilya Renner in third and Alexis Vavala fourth. Freshman Lacey Grinnen opened her varsity career with a strong 500 free time, Bunce said, and Mandy Fehlman had a strong second-place finish in the 100 butterfly.

The highlight may have been Elin Smith's 100 back time of 1:03.05, in which she won by 6 1/2 seconds.
