Voter ID

December 12, 2012
The Times Observer

Dear editor:

Was there fraud?

In my Random House College Dictionary, Revised Edition that I have fraud is defined as "Deceit, trickery or breach of confidence, used to gain some unfair advantage." In my Webster's Collegiate Dictionary we have similary words: "deceit, trickery" and "cheat, imposter." Then that dictionary adds under the heading of Law: "An intellectual perversion to the truth to induce another to part with some valuable thing belonging to him, or to surrender a legal right."

In the 2012 election how much fraud was there in voting? Probably none! Was that because the new Voter Registration ID Act? Probably not!

It seems to me that if there was any fraud that occured it was by the elected officials who passed the Voter Registration ID Act.

Under the definitions listed above the was deceit and trickery by Governor Corbett and the Republican controlled legislature to try and gain an advantage in the election of their presidential candidate and other statewide officials. And, as we know, it didn't work!

Think of the millions of dollars that have been wasted promoting the Voter Registration ID Act. Money that could have been spent on public education, libraries, road construction and the like. And think of the inconveniences to those who had to get their pictures taken. What a waste of money and time.

I am a registered Republican. I live in the area that is served by Kathy Rapp. Because she and Joe Scarnatti voted for this fraudulent Voter Registration ID Act, I left that part of my election ballot blank. If I had been represented by Martin Causer I wouldn't vote for him either. I feel that these individuals who have followed the party lines were the ones who are guilty of fraud in approving the Voter Registration ID Act.

It is time now for these and other legislative representatives to have the courage and integrity to repeal this stupid law. The voter registration process we have had in the past worked perfectly well.

The Rev. V. Theodore Benson
