Freshmen hoops
The Warren freshmen boys basketball team earned a 65-32 win over St. Martys on Saturday in the first round of the Elk County Freshmen Tournament, which will continue this weekend with the final against Elk County at Elk County Catholic.
On Saturday, Evan Suppa led Warren with 15 points, Devin Nowacki added 14, Andrew Gignac 12, Logan Galloway eight, Jason Waterfield four, Anthony Citro four, Anthony Deppas three, Sheldon McMeans three, and Ryan Skerda two.

The tournament is designed for members only and is designed to teach students how to introduce themselves to judges, compete with good sportsmanship and maintain and develop confidence. College news
Warren Area High School graduate and Pitt-Bradford men's basketball player Tyler Fantaskey scored seven points for the Panthers during an 84-60 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday. Fantaskey and the Panthers (5-2) return to action Sunday, visiting St. John Fisher.
Youth mat
A pair of local wrestlers from Russell competed and placed for the Ragin' Raisins wrestling club (based in North East) during an event held this past weekend in Grafton, Ohio. Logan Jaquay was a tournament champion in the 9-10 year-old, 65-pound bracket while younger brother Gannon Jaquay finished third in the 7-8 year-old, 65-pound weight class.
Caravan update
Tickets for the Pittsburgh Pirates 2012 Winter Caravan stop in Jamestown, N.Y. are sold out. The Pirates Caravan stop in Jamestown is replacing the Jammers annual hot stove dinner that typically takes place in January. The event is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jamestown Community College Student Union and includes a player meet and greet, autograph session and speaker program.
Announced for the event are Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, infielder Josh Harrison, outfielder Alex Presley and former Jamestown Jammer and current Bucs first baseman Gaby Sanchez. The Pirate Parrott mascot, broadcaster Tim Neverett and members of the Pirates front office staff are also expected to attend.
The Jamestown Jammers are a short-season Class A affiliate of Pittsburgh Pirates. The team is owned by Rich Products Corporation, which also owns two other minor league teams.

Beaty defeated Bradford, 25-15, in seventh-grade boys basketball play this past weekend. Elliot Gross led the winners with 11 points, Kohl Nosel added six points, Troy Shattuck, Ryan Munksgard and Rylan Fitzgerald added two points each and Andrew Davidson finished with one point.
