Winter Sports 2012-13

There is a 24-page special section entitled "Winter Sports" inside Friday's Times Observer. The section includes coaches' looks at the county's high school sports teams, with schedules and rosters, including the cover boy, Warren Area High School sophomore wrestler D.J. Fehlman, who is ready to move on from talk of freshman school records, to bigger sophomore goals. There is also a feature story on some newly-recruited Warren Area High School swim team "athletes." Varsity programs this fall include boys and girls basketball teams at Warren, Eisenhower, Youngsville, Sheffield, Warren County Christian and Tidioute Charter, wrestling teams at Warren, Youngsville, Eisenhower and Sheffield, and the swim team at Warren.

About the Cover
Yes, Warren Area High School sophomore D.J. Fehlman looks like the boy next door; he could pass for a 15-year-old paperboy from your block. This quiet, unassuming young man also has the distinction of being his high school’s first freshman District 10 champion, and the school record-holder for wins as a freshman. He didn’t give us much time to talk about it as Fehlman started focusing on his sophomore season the moment his freshman year (33-6) ended — it ended a couple inches and a couple seconds short of a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Tournament. Fehlman lost in overtime in the Northwest Region Class AAA third-place match, with his reversal just a few feet out of bounds at the end of regulation which would have given him a 6-4 decision. The former Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) state champion, and son of a former high school state champ, Fehlman doesn’t seem to look back, only forward. My idea for the “Winter Sports” cover photo — for the coaches’ season outlooks — was to dress Fehlman up as WWE champion CM Punk — with championship belt and all, but when you think of D.J. Fehlman, you think quiet assassin, not loud-mouthed “pipe bombs.” The only peep from D.J. during this photo shoot came when he started getting tired having his arm raised in victory by the ref. We hope his arm gets tired all season long.
