Opal Alice Tower Orton, age 86, of Wattsburg, Pa., died at St. Mary's Home of Erie on Monday, December 3, 2012 after a brief illness.
She was born on October 7, 1926, daughter of the late Ralph and Florence Johnson Tower.
Opal married Robert Daniel Orton on January 19, 1942. They were married 56 years when her husband died in 1998. Opal worked hard her whole life. Even as a very young child, she and her sister, Louise, helped their mother pick fruit in North East. She also helped her mother with cooking, baking and cleaning when their family had boarders in the 1930s. When she was school age, she worked after school for the Harwoods, walking long field rows, picking potatoes. She later returned to the job of picking fruit in North East and she worked for Welch's. For 15 years, Opal worked at Spitman's Dry Goods Store in Wattsburg.
She was always a devoted mother and loving grandma. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking pies, cakes and many other delicious desserts. Opal also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, sewing and quilting. She was an avid Scrabble player. Opal loved animals, especially her many cats, most of them strays she rescued. She enjoyed watching and feeding the birds.
Opal was a member of the Lowville United Methodist Church and was a loyal supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She is survived by two sons; Daniel D. Orton of McKeesport, Pa., and Robert D. Orton, Jr. and his wife Yvonne of Wattsburg, Pa., four grandchildren; Mark D. Orton, Scott M. Orton of California, Matthew D. Orton of Erie, Pa., and Melissa Orton Eastman of North East, Pa., one greatgranddaughter, Ella, of California, a sisterinlaw Marcy Orton of Vermont and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Maynard of Youngsville, Pa.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Thursday from 24 p.m. and 68 p.m. and attend a funeral service there on Friday at 11 a.m.. Rev. John Donner, Pastor of the Lowville United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Lowville Cemetery, Wattsburg, Pa.
