Recreational Tax

December 4, 2012
The Times Observer

Dear editor:

This letter is to voice our disapproval for the proposed Recreational Tax assessed to the Youngsville property owners to support the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool. This is not to say that we do not consider the BVSP an important recreational entity for our community but to tax a few just because we are property owners is totally unfair making us simply big & easy targets. I would speculate that vast majority of these 817 property owners will not even use this facility. Additionally, there are a number of these home owners that are on fixed incomes with no other family members who would benefit by having the BSVP. Rental property owners can absorb this increase by increasing their monthly rents but the owner occupied individual (s) has no such option.

While the Youngsville manager and borough council are quick to zero in on us property owners to future fund this facility, what about the number of non-home owners, Brokenstraw township residents and surrounding townships residents who will have use of the BSVP. Are they to benefit from this facility at the expense of my wife and me? What you're proposing is to place the financial burden on a select number to benefit many. Council needs to work harder to come up with a better solution.

Sincerely,

Dennis Rock,

Youngsville
