College news
Warren Area High School graduate and University of Massachusetts punter Colter Johnson was one of three Minutemen to be named to the All-Mid American Conference Third Team for his performances during the 2012 football season.
In his first year at Division I UMass, Johnson - who formerly punted at Alfred State - led the MAC in punting with a 43.6 yard average in 12 games. His 19 boots of 50 or more yards was also the most in the league. Against Bowling Green, he had a season-high five punts for 50 or more yards and, against Buffalo, Johnson had a season-high punting average of 50.6 yards. Johnson's 43.6 yard average for the season ranks as the second-best mark for a UMass punter - just shy of Brett Arnold's 45.2 yard average in 2008.
In year two of its transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), UMass posted a 1-11 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the MAC. The Minutemen won their first game at the FBS level on November 10, defeating Akron (22-14).
