The nearly block-long towering brick building is familiar to anyone who has attended an event at War Memorial Field. Usually referred to as the Jensen Building, it is a landmark that has become dilapidated.

The former site of the Conewango Furniture Co., the building at 115 S. Carver St., is coming down.

According to Alan Gustafson, building code official, the City of Warren issued a permit on Oct. 2 to Kingsview Demolitions of Lakewood, N.Y.,

The structure at 115 S. Carver St., the front of which is shown above, is currently in the process of being demolished. The building, which has stood for over 110 years, has been the backdrop for Warren Area High School Football for years. At left is the rear of what is left of the building.

"There are no firm plans as to the development of the property," said Janet Gregory, president of Crossett, Inc., which purchased the property in 2008. Demolition of the structure is well under way, but could still take over a month to complete.

The building dates back to 1901, when it housed the Conewango Furniture Co. until 1934, according Emily Sailar, program coordinator at the Warren County Historical Society. The company was best known for producing desks and tables in its early years before switching to bedroom furniture. Of its products, the Gol Line was one of the more recognizable names.

A 1944 survey of the town revealed the building then housed the Phenix Furniture Co. From 1904 to 1967, Phenix produced bedroom furniture, making it the longest-running furniture company in Warren.

Most recently, the building housed Jensen Paint Co. and Alcon Manufacturing Co. Inc. along with standing as the backdrop of the east end of War Memorial Field for its entire existence.
